The biggest concern people have when they experience depersonalization is that they are going to lose their mind or have schizophrenia, rest assured that you are not losing your mind! According to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Mental Health revealed that fifty percent of adults in the United States experienced one or two short attacks of depersonalization during their lifetime, as a result of stressful events. Depersonalization is a temporary state that happens after chronic stress or trauma. It usually goes away on its own and clears up within months or even days. People have episodes of depersonalization that come and go with stressful events. The most important thing you should know is that depersonalization cannot harm you. Typically what happens is when a person experiences depersonalization they start to obsess over it and the symptoms. Because they are so afraid of what is happening to them they spend their days worrying sick how they feel. The best thing to do when experiencing depersonalization is to let it be. Let it work its course, it will eventually go away. In the mean time focus on the things that bring you joy, engage in activities that are physically active and hobbies which require concentration.
